Community supporting Northeast High School softball field project

News Summary

The Northeast High School softball team is working towards finally having a dedicated home field after years of playing on inadequate facilities. With the support of alumni and community efforts, funds are being raised to build a proper field and improve existing resources for student-athletes. The project aims to establish the first ball-field supersite for softball and baseball in the city, despite facing challenges with funding and equity concerns. As construction plans progress, hopes are high for the team’s future success on a field of their own.

Philadelphia’s Northeast High School Softball Team Sees Hope for a Home Field

In a city known for its passion for sports, the Northeast High School softball team has long been a team without a proper home. For years, these dedicated players have been practicing on a junior varsity soccer field, using makeshift bases and cones. The situation has sparked a wave of support from alumni and the community, bringing together efforts to finally create a field designed just for the team.

Alumni Step Up to the Plate

The Northeast Alumni Association has taken the lead in a fundraising campaign aimed at building a dedicated softball field and revitalizing the neighboring baseball field. To help turn this dream into a reality, the School District of Philadelphia has already set aside funds for the project, which is anticipated to cost around six figures. This commitment signals a shift towards improving resources for student-athletes at Northeast High School, making it possible for the newly designed fields to comply with PIAA standards. With these updates, the school could host playoff games right on its own grounds!

Building a Supersite

This project doesn’t just aim to create a field; it aims to establish the first ball-field supersite for both softball and baseball in the city’s Public League. However, construction has hit a snag. Though it was slated to commence on July 1, 2024, delays have surfaced because of a necessary stormwater management system. The funding for this crucial project is currently waiting for approval, with estimates ranging between $800,000 and $1 million.

A Collective Effort

Principal Omar Crowder affirmed the school district’s commitment to cover construction costs, including installation and resodding. Unfortunately, this does not extend to auxiliary features like dugouts and stands. But never fear! Alumni have stepped up, raising approximately $75,000 in promised donations aimed at funding those extra features, such as a shiny new scoreboard.

Tackling Gender Equity Concerns

While the fundraising efforts are commendable, the project hasn’t been without its bumps in the road. Parents and students have raised concerns about gender equity in resources allocated to girls’ sports. Coaches have voiced their frustration about the lack of facilities for female athletes when compared to their male counterparts, and they are stressing the urgent need for equal opportunities across all athletics.

Safety Concerns with Current Setup

Currently, teams have to play their home games at the Jardel Recreation Center, which is about half a mile from the school. This setup is less than ideal and raises some serious safety concerns due to the need for students to cross a busy avenue just to play. The athletic director has acknowledged these challenges and has reiterated that ensuring gender equity in athletic programs is a top priority.

What’s Next?

As the date for construction looms closer, Principal Crowder is hopeful about providing an update to the school community before the end of the academic year. The baseball field, which has also fallen into disrepair, will be given some love in its current location on campus, while the new softball field is set to be positioned conveniently near the tennis courts. This dual effort is essential in rebuilding the athletic reputation of Northeast High School.

Bright Future Ahead

Despite their challenges, the Northeast softball team has a strong reputation for competing effectively even with inadequate facilities. With new resources on the horizon, hopes are high that the team will be able to build upon their successes and achieve greater heights in the upcoming seasons. For the players, their dreams of playing on their very own field may finally be within reach, and the Philadelphia community is rallying behind them every step of the way.
