Nestled in the heart of West Philadelphia, Hakim’s Bookstore stands as a beacon of African American culture and history. Established in 1959 by Dawud Abdel Hakim, it holds the distinction of being the city’s first and oldest Black-owned bookstore.

Hakim’s journey into bookselling began with a profound revelation. While working at the post office, he read 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro by J.A. Rogers, a work that illuminated the rich contributions of Black individuals throughout history—stories seldom highlighted in mainstream education. This awakening ignited a passion in Hakim to spread knowledge about Black heritage, leading him to sell books from the trunk of his car before establishing his first store on Walnut Street.

The bookstore quickly evolved into more than just a retail space; it became a community hub. During the 1960s, amidst the fervor of the Civil Rights Movement, Hakim’s served as a gathering place for activists, intellectuals, and community members seeking literature that resonated with their experiences and aspirations. The store’s shelves boasted a diverse collection, from historical texts to works on holistic health and natural nutrition, reflecting Hakim’s broad interests and commitment to community well-being.

Following Hakim’s passing in 1997, his daughter, Yvonne Blake, took the helm, ensuring the continuation of her father’s legacy. Under her stewardship, the bookstore faced challenges, particularly with the rise of large chain retailers and the digitalization of book sales. However, the community’s unwavering support and a renewed interest in Black literature have sustained the store. Notably, during the Black Lives Matter protests following George Floyd’s death, Hakim’s experienced a surge in demand, underscoring its enduring relevance.

In recognition of its cultural significance, Hakim’s Bookstore was honored with a Pennsylvania historical marker in 2023, cementing its status as a landmark in the state’s rich tapestry. Today, the store continues to thrive, offering a curated selection of books that educate, inspire, and empower, all while serving as a testament to the enduring power of knowledge and community.
